Funeral of Peter Connolly

President of the Ermine Street Guard

The late President (Praefectus) of The Ermine Street Guard, Peter Connolly, was committed at Peterborough Crematorium on 15th May 2012. The service was very well attended by Peter's relations, friends and colleagues from the archaeological and academic world. The Ermine Street Guard had the honour of providing the bearer party for Peter's coffin.

In accordance with Peter's wishes the service was conducted by the British Humanist Association. The actor Alan Dobie read a poem by Robert Frost, Peter's tenor son Matthew sung, "Nessun Dorma" magificently and Natasha Dobie sung Peter's favourite song, "You don't bring me flowers any more".

Chris Haines, chairman of The Ermine Street Guard, read the eulogy. Afterwards those present were invited back for refreshments to "Bookmark" at Spalding - a bookshop/restaurant where Peter would often go for a coffee and chat to the staff during his latter days.

It was a solemn but very fulfilling occasion.

The Guard sends it deepest condolences to Barbara and all Peter's family.

Peter was an outstanding President for the Ermine Street Guard and he will be sorely missed by all our members.
